hey folks, just picked up my first 10/22 and wow, it's a blast! i totally get the hype. shoots like a dream outta the box, but man, the customization options are wild.

trying to take it easy on upgrades, but wanna know what little tweaks y’all have done that really made a difference or just added to the fun.

what do you think i should tackle first?

Trigger upgrade is all I do. That is all mine ever needed.
If you're ammo dumping on tin cans, it probably doesn't matter, but if you want to wring the utmost accuracy from your rifle, a good trigger goes a long way.
Used to be, a $200+ Volquartsen was the ticket. And although it still, is, the Ruger BX1 trigger also is a huge improvement over most factory triggers, for less than a hundred bucks.

I've actually used Power Custom and Volquartsen parts in the past. Worked great for my applications.

I have had a 10/22 in the past. I am going to get another one. I don’t like the 25 round mags in those. The mag sticks out where I want to rest it on my left hand. They are timeless though. I am thinking about getting the one with the Walnut French Stock.

Well, like nearly any gun I would say got shoot it first and see if there are any particular 'idiosyncrasies' you may not particularity care for and then decide if it's something 'practical' to change or 'upgrade' or if it's something you can maybe improve yourself. Heck, you may like it just the way it is!

The term 'upgrade' has become so common these days and people seem to be 'brainwashed' with it as so many discuss buying new guns and the 'upgrades' they want to perform even before shooting it!

But like a lot of things in the 'modern gun world it's something that has been promoted by MFGS. of parts & accessories to promote sales. Kinda like 'Tactical'.

The irony of this is I have often seen people mention adding so many 'upgrades' to a gun they spent NEARLY as much on them AS the gun cost. Well, why not examine the gun CLOSER before buying it, or maybe consider a better gun to start with?

I am waiting on the right deal at the right time. I am looking for a 10/22 takedown without the threaded barrel, so I can take it with me when I visit one of my kids up in Washington.

High Tower Armory 90/22 (Black)-HTA9022BLK
No offense but is there anything about this that makes it 'superior' in any way to a conventional 10/22 ? Or any other traditionally designed and stocked .22 rifle?

Also the rail is so short how would you mount any 'conventional' sights on it ? But wait - it's all about 'tacticool' right? so just a red dot or maybe a scope if you could get mounts to fit.

It looks incredibly uncomfortable to shoulder and shoot and the 'bullpup' design of firearms has often been often criticized similarly for NOT being practical in any way but hey, one can own whatever they want but personally I would never own anything this stupid looking. Quite frankly, I would be embarrassed to be seen with it.

I put this in the same catagory as that 'Zip' .22 pistol that put U.S. Firearm Mfg. Co. out of business. Heck, they are kinda similar looking in a way.

Great conversation starter - hell, none of us have one, but here we are conversing ;)

Well, for 'serious' gun owners not much to converse about.

It's junk like this that ruined the gun market for a long time - and hopefully junk like this will disappear and maybe we will in some way return to a more 'conventional' gun world - AND MAYBE shut some of the ANTIS up by giving them less to beech about!

The Fabrique National PS90 ruined the gun market? I wouldn't know, they cost way too much, but I doubt FN made a turkey. Here's what my 10/22 looks like...

I'm guessing you've got lots to say about the KelTec RFB also! I haven't fired either the FN PS90, the Hightower P90/22, or the KelTec RFB so I can't comment on anything other than looks, but I'd love to get my hands on any of them to try them out. I try very hard not to prejudge anything before I've seen the facts. I didn't even like the idea of the SIG Sauer P320 (plastic? Hammer less?) until I fired one. But you do you.

I haven’t seen a KelTec yet that I would consider buying. The internal magazine 5.7 looked interesting, but you’d be up the creek if it jammed, which it is reported that they do. When I get a 5.7 it will be a Ruger or a PSA.

I'm looking for a 5.7 upper for my AR.
I knew the guys at Kel-Tec in Cocoa Beach - George Kellgren was my brother's brother-in-law. They had a nice facility, and some actual gun design engineers on staff. Never fired anything they made, but I am interested in the RFB, and maybe a Sub2000. I'm glad to hear I'm not a 'serious' gun owner. ;)

Oh I won't 'diss' on Kel Tec necessarily. They have some interesting designs and in the 'world' of PCCs the SUB 2K is one of those 'interesting designs' - and I actually owned a gen 1 many years ago. I was wanting some kind of PCC and after shooting one once I was impressed - well at first that is.

So I found a nice used one. Initially very accurate, cycled very well THEN I took it apart completely for cleaning and thats where the 'impressed' part came to an end. Not only was it extremely difficult to disassemble it was twice as hard (or more) to reassemble it. Part of the problem was the plastic parts that could have very easily been broken had I not been VERY careful and I was so frustrated with it it took me three days to reassemble as I had to set it down MANY times and walk away.

After eventual reassembly and testing I put it up for sale. I learned later apparently KT did NOT recommend complete disassembly and I could see why. Also I learned later the barrels on the Gen 1s were epoxied in and some were coming loose and falling out of some! KT had a repair for this which involved drilling a hole to install a pin. Also it was pretty obvious with the many EXTERNAL plastic parts and screws there was a chance of breakage

The gen 2 looked a lot better which cured some of the Gen 1s problems and the Gen 3 looks even better with it's full rail and twisting barrel design on folding which allows it to be folded no matter the size or style of sights.

The interesting thing is the S2K originally started as the Sub - 9 in the late 90s which had an alloy receiver and other metal parts but then transitioned to the Sub 2K.

It really depends on how deep down the rabbit hole you want to go and what your application is. The absolute best bang for your buck is an aftermarket trigger. I have both KIDD and JARD triggers. Both are exceptional.

If you want to go deeper, I also swapped out a lot of the internals (recoil spring, etc) with KIDD parts on one of mine.

If you want to go even deeper, the stock options abound as well. On my 10/22 Takedown Lite, I swapped all internals and the trigger with KIDD parts and then added the Magpul X-22 Backpacker stock. It securely holds three additional magazines inside a closed compartment in the top of the butt stock.

As someone else already advised... you might want to just play with it in its factory configuration for a while. They're a fantastic gun as delivered. It's a lot of fun to build it to whatever you want, as well as to improve accuracy a bit (factory is plenty accurate for plinking and small game hunting) but the receipts can add up fast! :)

Happy shooting!!
