I have a small supply of AAC (Palmetto State Armory) which has 75 gr Hornaday black tip projectiles. The tips are some sort of plastic as near as I can tell. I watched a gel test video of these rounds and they penetrate 16 inches in gel after a clothing barrier and expand and fragment.
This round expanded to around .45 to .50 and lost a few grains down to about 67 grains after leaving a nice, dirty channel in the gel. I shot about 20 rounds of these testing them and put 20 of them into a 20 round mag for one of my kid’s home defense AR’s. These performed well with small groups and the recoil was less than the standard M855 out of my shorty. These performed well problem is that I can’t find them anymore. I bought 200 rounds in 20 round boxes on sale for $12.99 a box.
PSA doesn’t have them listed on their site that I could see anymore, not even showing them as being out of stock. I placed a notification on their site to send me an email when they were back in stock, but that was months ago.
So, I looked at other .556 rounds and came across these:
These were tested from a 10.5 inch barrel and penetrated 16 inches. Expanded to .45 inches. But with a 16 inch barrel \the\y penetrated 21 inches and expanded to .68 inches. Regardless of Lucky’s price, I have found them for 80 cents a round elsewhere. Have any of you all used these at the range or hunted with them?
