Central Oregon shooting spots

I'm planning to spend some time in Central Oregon and I’d love to find a few good places to shoot. I’ve heard there are some solid public land spots but it’s hard to tell what’s still open and what’s been closed off. If you’re local or familiar with the area...what should I know before heading out?

BLM land around China Hat Road is usually a good shout, just be sure to check for any fire closures first..

What part of Central Oregon are you planning on ?

Reason is locations to shoot can vary depending on where you plan to be specifically.

I have lived a LONG time in Central Oregon - and currently in 'South Central' between LaPine and Sunriver.

Central Oregon is awesome, just watch out for cows getting in your shots, they seem to enjoy watching

Yea it USED to be however recently (the last few years) due to the ups and downs of parts of the area being established as homeless camps it lost that appeal.

There have been a couple shootings in the area in the last year and reports of people pointing guns at those driving through the area.

Last summer a major effort started and the Forest Service has been removing people from the encampment and conducting extensive trash and debris removal through volunteer efforts and staff. Parts of the area had been close off to the public as well.

Personally I would not consider it (for the time being anyway) as there are a LOT more areas to shoot at .

One area which is popular, yet generally well maintained is the Rock Quarry just East of Hwy 97 and Sunriver off Lava Cast Forest Road.
