Planning a road trip to visit family and trying to map out the best route. I want to bring my rifle along, but passing through New York is making that a bit complicated. I'm really not keen on adding a ton of drive time just to avoid the state, but I want to make sure I'm doing this right. Wondering if anyone else has navigated this situation before? What did you end up doing? I'm open to suggestions on routes or tips for traveling with a firearm.

Well, I am not sure about New York. I would call their State Police and find out the requirements.

I am in Oregon, and if I visit Washington State I have to have my guns unloaded in a locked container. And the Mags and ammo in another locked container. Both in the trunk. Also I can't bring magazines that hold more than ten, or any firearms with threaded barrels.

I also may not be able to bring an AR or AK style rifle. I haven't checked on that yet, but my son lives in Washington and says that none can be brought into the state, unless it's a resident leaving and returning to the state.

That's funny about New York. When I was driving over the road, there was a guy that I worked with that was delivering a load to a wharehouse in The Bronx.

He told me had arrived and backed his truck into the chute about ten minutes early. He had stepped out of the cab and he just lit a cigarette whe he heard a "click" behind him.

This guy told him to give him his wallet. He did and said "here, take the keys too". Truckers aren't supposed to carry firearms in interstellar transit and this guy lost $400 but he lived.

The guy that robbed him briefly tried to drive off with the truck, but he could'nt figure out how to shift it. He ran off as soon as the warehouse doors rolled up.
